# Compare theme translations

Check which translation keys changed in your theme's locale files, language by language.

This read-only page compares the text in your theme's language files (the `locales/*.json` files) between your live theme and a backup. Use it to see which words changed.

## Open the page

On **Home**, select **Themes** in the **Store data** card, then select the theme.

### Select Open theme translations

Select **Open theme translations** at the top of the theme page. The **Theme translations** page opens. The breadcrumb shows the theme name.

### Choose a backup

Use the **Backup version** menu in the **Backup** bar to pick which backup to compare.

## Read the page

* **Language** tabs: one per language file. A number on the tab is how many keys changed in that language.
* **Translation groups** on the left: groups of keys, each with its own changed count. The first group with changes opens for you.
* Rows show the key, the live value and the backup value. A blank value shows **(empty)**. A key that does not exist on one side shows "—".
* Each group shows 100 keys at a time, for example "1–100 of 240 keys". Use **Previous** and **Next** to move on.

Select **Open in Shopify admin** to open the theme's language editor in Shopify in a new tab.

## Messages you may see

| Message                                            | What it means                                                          |
| -------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| This language isn't in your live theme             | Every key shown comes from the backup only.                            |
| This language isn't in this backup                 | Every key shown comes from your live theme only.                       |
| One side of this language couldn't be read as JSON | The file is damaged or not valid, so its keys can't be compared.       |
| **No translation files found**                     | Neither your live theme nor the backup has any `locales/*.json` files. |
| **No backed-up translations yet**                  | No backup holds translation files for this theme.                      |
| **Couldn't load theme translations**               | Select **Try again**.                                                  |

## Restore translations

This page has no restore button. To bring translations back, restore the language file or the whole theme. Open the file with **Open file comparison** and use **Restore** there, or restore the theme.
