# Follow a restore and read the results

Watch a restore run, stop it if you need to, and understand every result on the finished screen.

After you start a restore, the app shows its progress and then a summary of what changed. This page explains both screens.

## Watch a restore run

While a restore runs, the page title is **Restoring** and the panel shows:

* A heading such as **Restoring 120 items from the Jun 3, 3:00 AM backup**, with the time left on the right, for example **About 2 minutes left**. It reads **Getting ready…** while the restore prepares.
* A progress bar.
* A counts line: restored, conflicts and partly restored (only if there are any), failed and waiting.
* **Now restoring** with the data type being written.
* One row per data type, in the order the restore writes them. A check mark means done, a warning means done with issues, a spinner with **Restoring** means in progress, and a hollow dot means waiting.

The first row is **Safety backup of your store**. It shows **Backing up** while it runs, then when it was taken and its size. If you skipped it, the row says so. See [Safety backups and undoing a restore](/backup-and-restore-tipo/restore/restore/safety-backups.md).

Under **Themes**, each theme has its own line, such as **Dawn · writing 12 files (3 already match)**.

### You can close the page

The panel says **You can close this page — we'll email you when the restore finishes.** You get the email if **A restore finishes** is ticked in [Email notifications](/backup-and-restore-tipo/settings/settings/notifications.md). To come back, open **Backups**, select **Restore history**, and open the restore. See [Restore history and details](/backup-and-restore-tipo/restore/restore/restore-history.md).

### Stop a restore

Select **Stop restore** to stop. There is no confirmation question. The button changes to **Stopping…** and a message appears: **Items already written stay restored. Anything not started yet is left as it is.**

## Read the finished screen

The page title tells you how the restore ended.

| Title | What it means |
| -------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Restore finished** | The restore ran to the end without failed items or conflicts. |
| **Restore finished with errors** | Some items failed, had a conflict, or were only partly restored. |
| **Restore stopped** | You stopped it. The number shows items restored before stopping. |
| **Restore failed** | The restore stopped because of an error. A red message with the reason appears. If it keeps happening, contact [support](/backup-and-restore-tipo/help/contact-support.md). |

Below the title you see the number of items restored and a line such as **From the Jun 3, 3:00 AM backup · took 2 minutes · 1 failed**.

### Results for each data type

Each data type has a row with **N of M** on the right and details underneath.

| Result | What it means |
| ------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **N updated** | The item existed and was changed to match the backup. |
| **N re-created** | The item was deleted, so it was created again. Shopify gives it a new ID. |
| **N already matched** | The item already matched the backup, so nothing was written. |
| **N still in your store** | You restored deleted items only, and these items still exist, so they were left alone. |
| **N not started** | The restore stopped or failed before reaching them. |
| **N failed** | The item could not be written and was left as it was. |
| **N conflicts** | The item was skipped because something it depends on is missing, or Shopify refused the change. |
| **N partly restored** | A theme where some files were written and some failed. Restoring again rewrites only what still differs. |

Theme rows add lines for each theme, for example **12 files restored**, **3 already matched**, **2 kept (only on live)** and **1 file failed: assets/theme.css**. Files that exist only on your live theme are always kept, because a restore never deletes theme files.

### Issue messages

When something needs your attention, a banner appears with a button that opens [Restore history and details](/backup-and-restore-tipo/restore/restore/restore-history.md) already filtered to those items.

| Message | Button |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| **N items failed and were left as they were.** | **View failed items** |
| **N items had conflicts and were skipped.** | **View conflicts** |
| **N items were only partly restored — some of their files failed.** | **View partly restored items** |

An information message appears when selected items were still in your store, or when theme files were kept because they exist only on your live theme.

### Safety backup line

If a safety backup was taken, the screen shows **Safety backup taken at … — restore it to undo these changes** and the **Restore safety backup** button. See [Safety backups and undoing a restore](/backup-and-restore-tipo/restore/restore/safety-backups.md).

### Buttons

| Button | What it does |
| ------------------------ | -------------------------------------- |
| **View restore details** | Opens the full record of this restore. |
| **Start a new restore** | Opens the **Backups** page. |
| **Go to Home** | Returns to **Home**. |

A note at the bottom reads **Your store shows these values now.** after a normal finish. After a stopped or failed restore it reads **Items not listed as restored were left as they were.**

## If something goes wrong

| What you see | What to do |
| ------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Failed items or conflicts | Select **View failed items** or **View conflicts**, read the reason for each item, fix the cause (for example restore the missing blog first), and restore again. |
| Partly restored theme | Restore the theme again. Only files that still differ are rewritten. |
| The restore seems stuck | Keep the page open or return later. If it does not finish, contact [support](/backup-and-restore-tipo/help/contact-support.md). |
