# Set up the app

Choose what to protect, when backups run and who gets emails with the four-step Get started wizard.

The first time you open **Backup & Restore Tipo**, a short wizard called **Get started** helps you choose what to back up, how much order history to include, when backups run, who receives emails and which plan to use. A progress line such as **Step 1 of 4** above each step shows where you are. Select **Continue** on each step until you reach the final **You're all set** screen.

| Step   | Name                                                      | What you decide                      |
| ------ | --------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| 1 of 4 | [What we back up](#what-we-back-up)                       | Which data types to protect          |
| 2 of 4 | [Order history](#order-history)                           | How far back to back up orders       |
| 3 of 4 | [Schedule and notifications](#schedule-and-notifications) | When backups run and who gets emails |
| 4 of 4 | [Choose your plan](#choose-your-plan)                     | Which plan fits your store           |

## When the wizard appears

The wizard opens automatically on a new install. You don't need to find it in the menu.

* Your progress is saved. If you close the app and come back, the wizard resumes where you left off.
* Until you finish it, **Home** takes you back to the wizard.
* You can't jump between steps. Use **Back** and **Continue**.

You can change every choice later in [Settings](/backup-and-restore-tipo/settings/settings.md).

## What we back up

Choose which data types to protect. Every row is ticked by default. You can change this anytime in Settings.

The **What we back up** table has three columns: **Data**, **Items** and **Included**. On a new install, every **Items** count is 0 because you have no backup yet.

| Data type | Included by default |
| ----------------------- | ------------------- |
| Products & variants     | Yes                 |
| Collections             | Yes                 |
| Metafield definitions   | Yes                 |
| Metaobjects             | Yes                 |
| Themes                  | Yes                 |
| Blogs & articles        | Yes                 |
| Files                   | Yes                 |
| Saved searches          | Yes                 |
| Pages                   | Yes                 |
| Menus                   | Yes                 |
| Locations and Inventory | Yes                 |
| Policies                | Yes                 |
| Shipping zones          | Yes                 |
| Customers               | Yes                 |
| Orders                  | Yes, export only    |

**Orders** shows the note **Export only — Shopify doesn't allow writing orders back**. You can back up and download orders, but you can't restore them into your store.

{% hint style="warning" %}
If you untick every row, backups can't start. Keep at least one data type ticked.
{% endhint %}

Select **Continue**. Your choices are saved when you finish the schedule step (step 3 of 4).

If you see **Couldn't load your settings**, select **Try again**.

## Order history

This step is called **Configure order backup**. What you see depends on your choice in the table above.

| Your choice | What you see |
| ---------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Orders** ticked | The text **Your store was created on** a date **and currently has approximately** a number **orders.** Under **Order history**, choose **All historical orders** (**Back up all available orders.**) or **Orders from a specific date** (**Back up orders created on or after the date you pick.**). For a specific date, also pick a **Start date**. |
| **Orders** not ticked | **Orders are not included in your backup. Continue to set your schedule.** |
| Already chosen earlier | **Your order backup choice is already saved. Continue to set your schedule.** |

**Continue** stays disabled until you pick a **Start date** if you chose **Orders from a specific date**. If saving fails, a **Could not save your choice** message appears with the reason. Fix it and select **Continue** again. Select **Back** to return to the previous step.

## Schedule and notifications

### Backup schedule

The timeline shows your last backup on the left, **Now** in the middle and your next backup on the right. On a new install the left side reads **No backup yet**.

| Option        | Choices                                                | What it does                                                                                                                 |
| ------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Frequency** | Every 6 hours, Every 12 hours, Every day, Every week | How often automatic backups run. The default is **Every day**. |
| **Time** | 12:00 AM, 2:00 AM, 3:00 AM, 6:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 9:00 PM | When the backup runs. For the 6-hour and 12-hour options, it sets where the cycle starts. The wizard shows the default time. |
| **Time zone** | Store time zone, or UTC | Which clock the **Time** uses. The default is your store time zone. |

The frequencies you can use depend on your plan. If you pick a frequency that is faster than your plan allows, the app saves the fastest one your plan includes instead. See [Compare plans](/backup-and-restore-tipo/plans-and-billing/plans/compare-plans.md).

### Notifications

* **Send to** is the email address for app emails. Separate several addresses with commas. If you haven't saved an address yet, the field starts with your store's email.
* **Send an email when** has four choices:

| Option                              | What it does                                                           | Default |
| ----------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------- |
| **A backup fails** | Sent right away, with the reason and whether the next run is affected. | On |
| **A restore finishes** | Includes what was restored and what was skipped. | On |
| **Weekly summary** | Every Monday: what changed in your store and what was backed up. | On |
| **You're close to your plan limit** | Sent once at 90% of your product limit, not every day after that. | Off |

Select **Continue** to save. If you see **Couldn't save your settings**, read the message, fix the problem and select **Continue** again. You stay on this step until it saves. Select **Back** to return to the previous step. After saving, the **Choose your plan** step opens.

## Choose your plan

The last numbered step is called **Choose your plan**, with the text **Pick the plan that fits your store. You can change this anytime.** It shows the same plan cards as the **Plans** page in the app.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Compare the cards. If a **Monthly** and **Yearly** choice appears above them, pick a billing period first. The yearly choice can show a **Save** badge.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Optional: if you have a discount code, enter it in the discount field above the cards and select **Apply**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
To use a paid plan, select its card button (for example **Upgrade to** a plan). In the window that opens, read the summary and select **Continue to Shopify**, then approve the charge on the Shopify page. You return to this step when you finish.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
To stay on your current plan (the card marked **Current plan**), don't choose a new one. Select **Continue** at the top of the page.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" %}
You can change or cancel your plan any time after setup. Plans are billed through Shopify. See [Compare plans](/backup-and-restore-tipo/plans-and-billing/plans/compare-plans.md) and [Change or cancel your plan](/backup-and-restore-tipo/plans-and-billing/plans/change-your-plan.md) for prices, limits and what happens when you switch.
{% endhint %}

If the cards don't load, select **Try again** under **Couldn't load your settings**. Select **Back** to return to the schedule step.

## You're all set

The screen shows a **Configured** badge and two buttons.

| Button              | What it does                                                             |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Back up now** | Starts your first backup and opens **Home**, where you can watch it run. |
| **Go to Dashboard** | Opens **Home** without starting a backup. |

If you do nothing, the app opens **Home** after about 5 seconds. It does not start a backup.

### If the backup doesn't start

A red message appears on the screen and you stay where you are. You can start a backup from **Home** instead.

| Message                                                                                   | What to do                                                                                                                                     |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| A backup is already in progress for this store. | Wait for it to finish. |

| No backup resources are enabled for this store. | Go to **Settings** and tick at least one data type. |
| Backups are paused: this store is over its plan. | Open **Plans** and choose a plan that fits. See [Usage and plan limits](/backup-and-restore-tipo/plans-and-billing/plans/usage-and-limits.md). |
| Choose how much order history to back up before starting a backup. | Go back to the **Order history** step and make a choice. |
| Could not start the backup. You can start one from the Home page. | Go to **Home** and select **Back up now**. |
