# Quickstart: your first backup

Go from opening the app to a finished, verified backup and an optional test restore.

In about ten minutes you will take your first backup, check that it worked, and optionally try a safe test restore.

## Before you start

* Install **Backup & Restore Tipo** from the [Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/backup-restore-tipo).
* For the optional test restore at the end, pick a product you don't mind editing, such as a test product.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the app from your Shopify admin

In your Shopify admin sidebar, open **Apps** and select **Backup & Restore Tipo**. The app has three entries: **Home**, **Settings** and **Contact us**.

On a new install, the **Get started** wizard opens. If you installed the app earlier and finished the wizard, skip to **Watch the backup run**. Open **Home** and select **Back up now** first.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose what to back up

On the first step, every data type is ticked in the **What we back up** table. Keep them all ticked, then select **Continue**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose your order history

On the **Configure order backup** step, keep **All historical orders** selected, then select **Continue**. If you unticked **Orders**, this step just says so. Select **Continue**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check the schedule and email

Keep the default **Frequency**, **Time** and **Time zone**. Under **Notifications**, check that **Send to** shows an email address you read. Select **Continue**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Pick a plan

The **Choose your plan** step shows the plan cards. To keep your current plan, select **Continue** without choosing a new one. To use a paid plan, select its card button and approve the charge in Shopify. You can change your plan any time. See [Compare plans](/backup-and-restore-tipo/plans-and-billing/plans/compare-plans.md).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Start your first backup

The **You're all set** screen appears. Select **Back up now**.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you do nothing, the app takes you to **Home** after about 5 seconds. No backup starts in that case. You can start one from **Home** at any time.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Watch the backup run

On **Home**, the status card at the top shows **Backing up your store**. In the **Store data** card, each data type shows **Waiting**, then **Backing up…**, then its numbers.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check that you are protected

When the backup finishes, the card says **Everything is backed up** with a **Protected** badge. The **Store data** card shows a record count and size for each data type.

The numbers in **Store data** can take about two minutes to appear after a backup ends.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Find the backup in your list

On **Home**, in the **Store data** card, select **Restore from a backup**. The **Backups** list opens. Your first backup is at the top with the status **Completed**. Select the number in the items column to see what the backup added.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Look at one backed-up item

Go back to **Home**, select **Products** in **Store data**, then select a product. The page shows **Live store** on the left and **Backup** on the right. Nothing is highlighted, because the product hasn't changed since the backup.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Optional: try a test restore

Use a test product for this step.

1. In your Shopify admin, change the product's title and save it.
2. Back in the app, open the same product and select **Refresh live data**. The changed row is highlighted.
3. Select **Restore**. In **What to restore**, tick only **Product details**, then select **Restore**.
4. Wait for **Restored successfully**, then check the product in Shopify. The original title is back.
   {% endstep %}
   {% endstepper %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
Restoring overwrites the live item with the backed-up version. Take a backup before you restore something important. A single-item restore doesn't create a safety backup.
{% endhint %}
