# Customer privacy requests (GDPR)

How Backup & Restore Tipo handles customer data requests and erasure requests that Shopify forwards.

Shoppers can ask Shopify for a copy of their data or ask to be erased. Shopify forwards these requests to apps that store customer data. This page explains what Backup & Restore Tipo does when that happens.

You do not need to do anything for the erasure itself. The app handles it automatically.

## Customer data request

When Shopify forwards a data request for a customer, the app emails a summary to your store's notification recipients. It sends this email for every request, even if you turned other emails off.

The summary shows:

* The customer ID, email and phone number
* Whether the customer appears in your backups
* How many saved versions there are, and when the first and last were saved
* Roughly how many restore points include the customer
* The date the customer was deleted from your store, if they were
* How many of the orders in the request are in your backups

No data file is attached. To see the full record, open the app, go to your backed-up **Customers** and search by email or ID.

## Customer erasure request

When Shopify forwards an erasure request, the app removes the customer from every backup:

* The customer record and all its saved versions are deleted. The customer no longer appears as a deleted item you could restore.
* Orders that Shopify lists in the request are kept, but without the email, phone, note, customer link, billing and shipping addresses, and order metafields.
* Future backups do not store that customer again, and they store those orders without personal details.

If a backup, restore or export is running when the request arrives, the app waits for it to finish and then continues. Every request is completed within the 30 days Shopify allows.

## Store erasure after uninstall

About 48 hours after you uninstall, Shopify sends a store erasure request. The app then makes sure your data is deleted on time, within 30 days of uninstall. If you reinstalled in the meantime, your data is left intact. See [Uninstalling and reinstalling](/backup-and-restore-tipo/reference/permissions-and-data/uninstall-and-reinstall.md).

## Requests that do not come through Shopify

If a customer contacts you directly, ask them to use Shopify's process, or email <hi@tipo.io> with your store address and what you need. Read the [privacy policy](https://tipo.io/pages/privacy-policy) for more.
