# Compare theme files

See a line-by-line comparison of any theme file between your live theme and a backup.

Check what changed in a single theme file, such as a Liquid template, a stylesheet or an image, before you decide to restore it.

## Open a file

### Open the theme

On **Home**, select **Themes** in the **Store data** card, then select the theme. See [Themes](/backup-and-restore-tipo/browse-and-compare/browse/themes.md).

### Select a file

In the **Theme files** list, search or sort if needed, then select the file name. The file page opens. The breadcrumb **Theme files** takes you back to the theme.

### Choose a backup version

Use the **Backup version** menu on the right to pick which backup to compare against. The newest is selected by default.

## Read the comparison

The **Content comparison** section shows the **Live store** file next to the **Backup** file.

### Text and code files

You see a line-by-line comparison. On a wide screen the two versions sit side by side. On a narrow screen they are shown in one column. Files up to 300 lines are shown in full. Longer files show the changed lines with a little context around them.

If the files are the same, you see **No differences between the live file and this backup.** and the file content.

### Images

Each side shows a preview with **File name**, **File type**, **Size** and **Backed up**, plus a **Download** link.

### Other file types

Some files can't be previewed. You see **No preview available for this file type** or **This file type isn't compared. Open it to view the file.** with an **Open file** link. If the content is missing, you see **Content is unavailable for this file or backup version.**

## Restore one file

Select **Restore** at the top of the file page to restore that single file from the selected version. The file is written to its theme. There are no destination or safety backup options for a single file. To restore into a copy of the theme, or to take a safety backup first, use the theme page instead. ## If something goes wrong

If you see **Couldn't load theme files**, select **Try again**. If one file will not load, choose a different backup version.
