# Permissions the app requests

Each Shopify permission Backup & Restore Tipo asks for and the data type it is used for.

When you install Backup & Restore Tipo, Shopify shows you a list of permissions to approve. This page explains what each one is for, so you know why the app asks for it.

## How the permissions work

The app reads your store data to **back it up**. It uses the matching write permission only to **restore** data back into your store. If a data type has no restore, the app asks for read access only.

The app uses offline access. This means it can reach your store when you are not logged in, which is what lets scheduled backups run at night without you opening the app.

## Permissions by data type

## Data that is backed up but not restored

These permissions are read-only, or the data is kept for viewing and export only:

| Orders                                   | Read orders                                 | Backs up your orders so you can view and export them. Shopify does not allow orders to be written back. |
| Policies                                 | Read legal policies                         | Backs up your store policies for viewing.                                                               |
| Shipping zones                           | Read shipping                               | Backs up your shipping zones for viewing.                                                               |
| Locations and inventory                  | Read inventory, read locations              | Backs up your locations and inventory levels for viewing and for the inventory CSV export.              |

## Turn off what you do not need

You choose which data types are backed up in Settings. If you turn a data type off, the app stops backing it up. Approving a permission at install does not force a data type to be backed up. See [Choose what to back up](/backup-and-restore-tipo/settings/settings/what-we-back-up.md).
