# Restore data

Pick the right way to bring data back: one item, a few items, whole data types, a theme or an exported file.

Restore puts data from a backup back into your Shopify store. This page helps you choose the right way to restore, so you only change what you mean to change.

## Which restore do I need?

A safety backup is a copy of your store taken right before a restore writes anything. Read [Safety backups and undoing a restore](/backup-and-restore-tipo/restore/restore/safety-backups.md) to see how it works and how to undo a restore.

## What you can restore

You can restore these data types:

* Products
* Collections
* Metafield definitions
* Metaobject definitions
* Metaobject entries
* Pages
* Blogs
* Blog posts (articles)
* Menus
* Files
* Themes
* Customers

Orders, inventory, policies, saved searches and shipping zones are backed up and you can browse them, but you cannot restore them. For the details of each type, see [How restore works](/backup-and-restore-tipo/reference/how-it-works/how-restore-works.md).

## Before you restore

* Only one restore can run at a time for your store.
* You cannot start a restore while a backup is running. Wait for the backup to finish.
* If your store is over what your plan includes, backups and restores are paused. Free up space or upgrade your plan. See [Usage and plan limits](/backup-and-restore-tipo/plans-and-billing/plans/usage-and-limits.md).
* A restore writes only the differences. Anything that already matches the backup is left alone.

{% hint style="info" %}
A restore does not run unless you start it. Nothing changes in your store while you browse backups or compare items.
{% endhint %}

## After you restore

* [Follow a restore and read the results](/backup-and-restore-tipo/restore/restore/follow-a-restore.md) shows how to watch a restore and what each result means.
* [Restore history and details](/backup-and-restore-tipo/restore/restore/restore-history.md) lists every past restore and the reason for each item.
* [Safety backups and undoing a restore](/backup-and-restore-tipo/restore/restore/safety-backups.md) explains how to go back if a restore was not what you wanted.
