# Change or cancel your plan

Upgrade, downgrade, switch your billing period or move to Free, and approve the charge in Shopify.

Use the Plans page to upgrade, downgrade, switch between monthly and yearly billing, or move to the Free plan. Paid plans are approved on Shopify, and nothing is charged until you approve.

## Change your plan

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the Plans page

In the app, open **Home**, then select **View plan** in the **Plan & usage** card. You can also open **Settings** and select **Change plan** in the **How long backups are kept** card.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose Monthly or Yearly

At the top of the page, select **Monthly** or **Yearly**. The button for the period you are viewing is greyed out. Select the other one to switch. Yearly saves 16%.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Select a plan button

Select the button on the card of the plan you want. The label depends on where you are coming from:

| Button | When you see it |
| ------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Upgrade to {Plan}** | The plan costs more per month than your current plan. |
| **Switch to {Plan}** | The plan costs less per month than your current plan, including Free. |
| **Switch billing period** | You choose the same plan with the other billing period, for example Growth monthly to Growth yearly. |

Your current plan shows a greyed-out **Current plan** button. Nothing is charged when you select a button. A window opens first so you can check the change.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Review the Change to window

The window is titled **Change to {Plan}**. It shows:

* The price, for example "$29 per month." If a discount applies, it shows the discounted price and what you pay afterwards. If you are eligible for the free trial, it adds "Includes a 7-day free trial."
* A table that compares your current plan (the column named **Now**) with the new plan for **Products**, **Storage**, **Retention**, **Backups always kept**, **Deleted items kept** and **Automatic backups**.
* A warning, if the new plan keeps backups or deleted items for a shorter time. See [If the new plan keeps things for less time](#if-the-new-plan-keeps-things-for-less-time).
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Continue to Shopify

Select **Continue to Shopify**. The app takes you to Shopify's approval page. The window reminds you: "You'll approve the charge on Shopify. Your plan changes as soon as Shopify confirms it."

Select **Cancel** instead if you changed your mind.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Approve the charge on Shopify

Review the charge on Shopify, then approve it. Shopify sends you back to the **Plans** page.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check the result

Back on **Plans**, a banner tells you what happened. See [After you return from Shopify](#after-you-return-from-shopify).
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" %}
Paid plans are billed through Shopify. The charge appears on your Shopify bill, and approving a new charge replaces your previous one. You always have one paid plan at a time.
{% endhint %}

## After you return from Shopify

| What you see | What it means |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Your plan: {Plan}.** | Shopify confirmed the charge, and your plan is now active. |
| **Waiting for Shopify to confirm the charge. The new plan shows here once it does.** | Shopify has not confirmed yet. Refresh the page after a moment. Your plan changes as soon as Shopify confirms. |
| **Could not check the plan with Shopify. Please refresh in a moment.** | The app could not reach Shopify. Refresh the page. |

If you decline the charge on Shopify, your plan does not change. The banner shows the plan you are still on. If a paid plan has no active charge on Shopify, your store returns to the Free plan.

{% hint style="warning" %}
A charge you start but never approve eventually expires. If that happens, start the change again from the Plans page.
{% endhint %}

## Move to Free (cancel your paid plan)

Moving to Free cancels your paid subscription. There is no separate cancel button, and you don't need to go to Shopify.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Open the **Plans** page.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Switch to Free** on the Free card.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Check the **Change to Free** window, then select **Switch to Free**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

The app cancels your Shopify charge right away, the Free plan applies at once, and you see the message **You're now on the Free plan.**

Uninstalling the app also ends your paid subscription. See [Uninstalling and reinstalling](/backup-and-restore-tipo/reference/permissions-and-data/uninstall-and-reinstall.md).

## Downgrade rules

You can move to a plan with lower limits, as long as your store fits in it.

### You can't pick a plan your store already exceeds

If your store has more products or more stored backups than a plan includes, that plan's button is greyed out. A line on the card explains why, for example:

* "Your store has {number} products — this plan includes {limit}."
* "Your store uses {size} of storage — this plan includes {limit}."

To make room, reduce the number of products in your store, or free up storage, for example with [Delete all backups](/backup-and-restore-tipo/settings/settings/delete-all-backups.md). You can also choose a bigger plan.

### If the new plan keeps things for less time

When a new plan keeps backups or deleted items for less time, or keeps fewer backups always, the app waits 7 days before it removes anything. If you change your mind within that week, you lose nothing. The Change to window shows the date, for example:

* "Backups older than 30 days will be removed from {date}."
* "Deleted items will be kept for 90 days, from {date}."

After the 7 days, backups older than the new retention period are removed. The most recent backups that your new plan always keeps stay, whatever their age.

### If your schedule is faster than the new plan allows

Your saved schedule stays as it is, but automatic backups run at the fastest pace the new plan allows. For example, a schedule of every 6 hours runs once a day on Starter. See [Backup schedule](/backup-and-restore-tipo/settings/settings/backup-schedule.md).

## Proration and refunds

Shopify handles billing for paid plans, including what happens to the rest of a billing period when you switch or cancel. For details, see Shopify's billing documentation in the Shopify Help Center. The app doesn't issue refunds or credits itself.

| Message                                                             | What to do                                                                                                                                         |
